2/2/10 Reported Fire at Lincoln Elementary

During the evening of February 2nd, Station 5(Leland), Station 19 (Navassa) and Station 33 (Northwest) were alerted to a possible structure fire at Lincoln Elementary School. Leland Engine 5071, E5072, Tower Ladder 5061, Rescue 5095, Paramedic Ambulance 5096 Chief 580, and Chief582 all responded on the run with a total of 10 personal. Upon arrival 504 established IC with nothing showing from the school. After investigation smoke was found in one wing of the hallway and 5071's crew was assigned to investigate division 1. Tower Ladder 5061's crew along with Rescue 5095's crew went to the roof to investigate as well. After a short time 5071's crew located a faulty hot water heater in a closet and quickly controlled the fire. All units were released by command in just under an hour.

Leland Firefighters Hone their Extrication Skills
1/14/10: On the evening of the 14th C-Shift Lt. Benton was able to secure a donated car for the members of Leland Fire Rescue to perform extrication training on. 11 members, 7 volunteers and 4 career personal participated in the training which was lead by career Lieutenants Jeff Benton and Jamie Williamson. Under the instruction of the Lieutenants the car was stabilized, the car's windows, doors, and roof were removed, the dash was rolled, and a 3rd door conversion was performed on each side of the vehicle. Special thanks to Callahan's Junkyard for providing us with the donated car.

Weekend Brings 4 Structure Fire Calls to Leland Crews with 2 First Due Working Fires.
Between the days of Saturday 1/9/10 and Sunday 1/10/10 Leland Fire Crews responded to four reported structure fires and found two of them to be working fires. The first working fire was reported Saturday afternoon around 1700. Leland Engine 5071, 5072, Rescue 5095, and Chief 580 responded with a total of 7 personal to the scene. 5071 arrived first due to find a single story residential structure with smoke showing. Leland crews located a fire in the laundry room at the A/D corner of the structure and made a quick knock down allowing the fire to be marked under control within 15 minutes and therefore limiting damage to the rest of the structure. Leland firefighters were assisted by crews from Station 33 (Northwest) and Station 19 (Navassa). The second working fire was reported Sunday morning at Brunswick County Nursing Home off of River Rd. Leland Engine 5071, 5072, Rescue 5095, Tower Ladder 5061, Chief 580, Paramedic Ambulance 5096, and Intermediate Ambulance 5097 all responded on the run with a total of 15 personal. Responding units were advised that communications was receiveing mutliple calls and an evacuation of the facilties was in progress. With this information Engine 5071 requested addidtional units to be dispatched due to the nature of the building and the additional information communications had provided. Leland Engine 5071 arrived first due to find a window AC unit on fire in a patients room and quickly extinguished the same. With the fire quickly marked under control command cancelled additonal responding equipment. Leland firefighters were assisted by crews from Station 33 (Northwest), Station 19 (Navassa), Station 6 (Winabow), Station 4 (Boiling Springs Lake), Brunswick County Emergency Management and New Hanover County Fire Station 51.

Engine 5071 arrived as the third due engine company and was requested to make entry with the fire attack team with their Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) to assist them with locating and extinguishing the fire. Once inside 5071's crew located the fire on the C side of the structure for the fire attack team and then assisted with extinguishment, pulled ceiling and ventilating the structure. 5095's air system was utilized to fill air bottles used by crews from Station 33 and Station 5. Leland units operate on scene for just over an hour and half before being released by command.

Leland Volunteer Fire Rescue was alerted to reports of a Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC) on Blackwell Rd. QRV 5081 was returning to Headquarters Station from the Westport Station when the run came in and arrived first on scene to report a two vehicle collision with one vehicle in the roadway and one in the ditch. Engine 5071 with 3 firefighters responded on the run as well and was tasked with securing both vehicles. It was quickly noted that one of the vehicles was smoking and the crew located a small electrical fire in the dash and quickly extinguished it with the use of a dry chemical extinguisher. Fortunately there were no injuries in the accident and upon removing the vehicles from the roadway all Leland units cleared after being on scene for just over a half an hour.
